Katie Kirkpatrick

Fellows Coordinator

  • Katie was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, and studied public relations at the University of Alabama. Following graduation in 2012, she moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, to participate in the Trinity Fellows program. Her fellows’ year and the subsequent four years she spent in Charlottesville were the most formative of her life so far. She faced unique challenges, grew in her faith, experienced God’s grace in ways she never had before, made lifelong friends, met her husband, and discovered that work could be so much more than just the “daily grind.” In 2017, Katie and her husband, Halston, relocated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. There they stayed connected to The Fellows Initiative as Halston employed many fellows over the years through his work.

In 2021, Katie and Halston found their way to Birmingham where they have thoroughly enjoyed living closer to family, raising their two young girls, Claire and Chloe, and getting involved with Covenant Presbyterian Church (joined in 2022). Katie is honored to be helping start the Iron City Fellows program and hopes to use all she learned and experienced during her time as a fellow to help shape the experience of those who choose to invest nine months of their life in this valuable way.

Daniel Sluis

Pastor for Fellows

  • Daniel grew up in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and went on to study Spanish and education at Covenant College on Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Covenant’s motto, “In all things Christ preeminent,” took root in Daniel’s heart and began shaping his worldview. Everything from school studies, relationships, and mundane life was filtered through a Gospel framework. After graduating, Daniel married his wife, Gracie, and they moved to Atlanta and served in a church there for three years.

In 2019, they moved to Birmingham where Daniel began working in youth ministry at Covenant Presbyterian Church. His time spent in youth ministry grew his love for relational discipleship and equipping others for the work of ministry. Six years and three kids later, Daniel received his Masters of Divinity from Beeson Divinity School and was ordained as an Assistant Pastor at Covenant. He is very excited about being integrated into the lives of the fellows and exploring Christ’s sovereignty over every area of life!
